Funding Mission
Formas funds research that contributes to a sustainable development in the areas of environment, agricultural sciences and spatial planning. Problems defined in terms of sustainable development are the basis for Formas funding. The research funded can be both basic and applied – it is the contribution to a sustainable development that motivates funding from Formas.

Formas funding can either take form of open calls where the applicants define the contribution to a sustainable development in their applications, or of thematic calls within a specific problem area of importance for sustainable development.

Standing Expert Committees
Formas is assisted by six standing expert committees in the assessment of research proposals. The expert panels focus on important problem areas in order to promote research contributing to sustainable development. Each expert panel welcomes applications within its problem area from all academic disciplines. The expert committees assess proposals both from open calls and thematic calls.
