IIASA - The International Institute for Applied System Analysis
IIASA, The International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis, is an international research institute working on researching and developing tools for studies primarily of major global environmental issues, such as long-term changes to climate, demography and land use. Research concerning energy systems, cross-border air pollution and general risk issues are also on the agenda.
The institute, located in Laxenburg just outside Vienna, which is owned by a consortium of agencies or equivalent bodies in 16 countries, has around 70 researchers employed on short and long-term contracts, along with a general staff similar in number. The member countries are represented on the IIASA Council, which makes the major decisions on research planning etc.
Formas, the Swedish Research Council for Environment, Agricultural Sciences and Spatial Planning, is the agency representing Sweden, with Formas’ Director General Rolf Annerberg, as acting council member and having a seat on the IIASA Council. Formas performs a secretariat function in terms of Swedish communication with IIASA, and to support its work, it has set up a committee of representatives from universities and other agencies.
