2. The natural environment

Basic and needs-driven research with focus on e.g.:

• Biological and geo-chemical processes and ecosystem structures, functions and dynamics
• Human impacts on species, ecosystems and ecosystem services, and human dependency on ecosystems
• Measures to prevent the loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services
• Understanding and interpretation of the natural environment and human needs for the nature, including in its historical contexts
• Institutional impediments to, and opportunities for the maintenance and management of ecosystems
