Population pressure and associated urbanization along the Portuguese coast is amongst the largest in Europe. Available coastal environmental amenities (like beach, lagoon and river areas) as well as urban amenities (like cultural, leisure and transport services) provide key incentives for population growth and associated urban development, though at the same time impose positive and/or negative effects on these amenities.
The purpose of this research collaboration is to develop, apply and test a spatially explicit environmental-economic modelling approach that allows us to explore likely evolutionary (privately optimal) and sustainable (socially optimal) coastal urbanization development patterns.
Our contribution to this research collaboration is in the field of spatial envirnonmental-economic modelling for sustainable development planning and management.

I received my Ph.D. in location analysis and Water Pollution from Portland State University in 2002. I would like to analyze functional and spatial urban-rural linkages and their roles in rural and regional development. How they function and can be used in regional development, effects of social and territorial capital in well- developed rural-urban linkages, management of these linkages for a sustainable rural and regional developments are some of interesting topics. Also, using footprint impact analysis of these linkages may illuminate the ways we can improve relevant policies
