Bonus for the Baltic Sea

The history of BONUS dates back to the year 2003, when BONUS ERA-NET started. At that time, there was no large-scale cooperation between the Baltic Sea research funding organisations, only limited cooperation activities between different countries. The ERA-NET instrument of the EU’s 6th Framework Programme was considered an appropriate tool to develop and broaden the Baltic Sea research funding cooperation.

During the lifetime of BONUS ERA-NET, several activities were implemented, including writing of the BONUS-169 Science Plan and launching the first joint BONUS + Call.

In 2005, BONUS ERA-NET was invited to Article-169 negotiations, and in 2006, the European Commission decided that BONUS would proceed to Article-169 phase in 2008/2009. The main objective will be the implementation of the Joint Baltic Sea Research Programme, BONUS-169, under Article 185 (formerly 169) of the EC Treaty. The programme will be funded jointly by the EU and all members and associated members of the BONUS EEIG, as well as by other donors, during 2010-2016. The anticipated funding volume is about 100 million euro. The legislative proposal concerning BONUS-169 was handled by the European Parliament and Council in 2010 and the final decision was made on 16 June 2010.
